Living Architecture

This week I am looking at a project which focuses less on the relationship that architecture has with its surroundings, but rather how architecture, solely, can shape an experience. Living Architecture is a project based in the U.K. consisting of six holiday homes designed by some of the most influential architects currently working in and around the U.K.  The rates are reasonable and the destination becomes the architecture, rather than its surroundings. The project argues that on a day-to-day basis ,the works of these prolific architects are often limited to private homes of the wealthy,  or in public spaces such as museums, universities etc.  The result is the broadening of the reach of the work of these architects. It goes without saying that the architecture and design of any given geographic location holds a great deal of significance for both the inhabitants and visitors. Instantly, and without explanation, bead board wainscoting brings you to Cape Cod, Terra Cotta Roof Tiles to the Mediterranean, a hand cut mosaic tile to Marrakesh. Iconic details serving as an instant, de-codified reminder of either where you are, or perhaps where you would like to be. It is this interaction between design and location that gives insight into not only how any given culture came to be, but also how it hopes to evolve.
